Charles L. Seymour, farmer, Sec. 15; P. O. Clinton; son of Reuben and
Almira (Haynes) Seymour, was born in Genessee Co., NY in 1818. In 1842
he came West, and after a years travel in quest of a place for a future
home, he located in Clinton Co., IA in 1843, located and improved the
farm on which he has since resided, consisting of 108 acres. In 1840,
Mr. Seymour married Miss Clarissa Day, at Hartland, Niagara Co., NY, a
native of Vermont. They had five children: Charles S., Julia E., Oscar
W., Martha J. Marcus D., Alfred L. and Edgar D. Mrs. Seymour was a
consistent member of the Congregational Church until the time of her
death in 1861. In 1864 Charles married Mary J. Wilson, (Mary Jane
Rowser), of this county, but a native of PA. Charles and Mary Jane had
no children. Mr. Seymour and wife were members of the Methodist
Episcopal Church. Mr. Seymour was a democrat. His parents were natives
of NY and Massachusetts, and were married in New York Jan. 1, 1817. They
came to Iowa in 1841, and laid claim to quite a tract of land. They
later purchased another tract of school land. Ruben was for many years a
Judge of Probate in this county. He departed this life in 1873, having
attained the 79th year of his age. His wife, Almira, lived with Charles
after the death of her husband. (She was 84 in 1879 at the writing of
this biography.)
